Mike Moon
"Taking the 30,000 foot view"
Some people like to travel. Mike really likes to travel. At last count, he was clocking about fifty countries and six continents. It’s a big world, and Mike wants to see as much of it as he can: up close and personal. Some of his fondest and most vivid travel memories are probably not in the average person’s comfort zone: slurping down spicy soup served from a plastic bucket on a Hanoi sidewalk, sweating through his shirt on a road trip through the Hadramaut valley of northern Yemen, or fighting altitude sickness and six hours of darkness to summit a 19,000 ft. Ecuadorean volcano.
But for Mike, it’s about more than travel. It’s a constant journey to understand the world as a system, whether that be a system of people, languages, commerce, ideas, or geographies. Mike brings this unique perspective and ability to see the big picture to every consulting engagement. Starting with high level goals and strategies, he translates concepts and intent to execution and delivery. In Mike’s view, if you can’t explain how something relates to your long term objectives, then why are you doing it in the first place?
Mike has always been a big picture guy. As a Ranger-qualified infantry officer, Mike led platoons and detachments in the rubber-meets-the-road part of the Army. Success in the infantry demands not only an understanding of the supporting elements of the Army, but the willingness and skill to leverage those assets to the maximum. After the Army, Mike headed to Europe for broader horizons and two years of graduate school. His first job out of grad school found him working in debt capital markets at a Wall Street investment bank, where a solid grasp of bond mathematics, macroeconomics, and credit were the price of admission. As he transitioned into consulting, Mike worked in numerous industries and companies: from computer retailing, to marine manufacturing, to sporting goods, to telecommunications. At every stop along his journey, Mike found a way to connect the day-to-day with the long term; the tactical with the strategic.
Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also has a master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri, an MBA from the London Business School, and PMP certification from the Project Management Institute.
