"I make things happen, I get things done and I'm the keeper of all things." In other words, Melissa Camarillo is a work-world wizard who plays a key administrative role at ACME. She is the guiding light for all comings and goings, and the glue that holds the ship together. How she joined the crew at ACME is a full-circle tale of gambling, adventure and notoriety. Melissa, originally from Portland, set sail more than 10 years ago for the city of bright lights and feathered showgirls: Las Vegas. At the time, she was co-owner of an Internet start-up that developed new product lines for distributors. Her interest in the business soon dried up, and she charted a new course in Sin City, including stints as a convention hostess and part-time casino bookie. Eventually, she jumped aboard a national nonprofit, where she served as executive assistant to the CEO. From there she moved to a Las Vegas marketing/P.R. agency, where she excelled in the role of operations supervisor and handled a multitude of managerial duties. It was at this point that Melissa claimed her 15 minutes of fame - all thanks to one crazy afternoon Cruise. When the maniacal mega-star appeared on Oprah and jumped up and down on her couch, Melissa and a friend put their minds to work and coined a new phrase. "Jump the couch" soared into pop culture vernacular and was chosen as "Catchphrase of the Week" by People magazine. The phrase (meaning when someone goes off the deep end) was listed in the Historical Dictionary of Slang (2005). Now back in Portland, Melissa has come full circle. At ACME, she is just a few blocks from where she had her first full-time job, at Bridgeport Brewing. Melissa's multifaceted background is of boundless benefit for ACME. Nothing fazes her. No detail escapes her attention. She is an anchor in a swirling sea of business endeavor. She and her husband have an anchor, as well: a 2-year-old daughter named Lulu - who is just learning to "jump the couch." |
