James Hall

The concept of the Renaissance Man has been around since, well, the Renaissance. But the world was a lot smaller then (figuratively speaking). Arts, languages, math and science, yes. High technology, e-commerce, international corporations and channel management, no. It’s truly hard to be a modern-day Renaissance Man, in the business world or otherwise – but James Hall qualifies in our book.

James grew up in Portland speaking French and attending Catlin Gabel School. After high school, he took his act to The Sorbonne in Paris, earning a degree in economics. Then it was a political science degree back in the states, followed by a position with the Senate Finance Committee in D.C. But while there, well, might as well pass the Foreign Service exam and attend the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, right? While James waited for his first overseas assignment as a U.S. Economic Officer, he further broadened his skills by completing an MBA program at Vanderbilt University, specializing in e-commerce (and studying the cello in their music school) while also working for a consulting firm. By the time an assignment came up in Africa 14 months later, James had decided to stay in the business world.

He’s continued his relentless well-rounding in a career that’s spanned 15 years and countless successful projects. As you might expect, James has not done just one thing. With Ernst & Young, EPD Consulting and now ACME, he’s tackled projects as varied as channel management strategy, Internet sourcing models, new-product market viability and customized procurement solutions. If you put a challenge in front of him, he’s going to apply a mind-boggling array of skills and experiences to find the best solution. 

Oh, and in his down time he mixes in triathlons, kite- and snowboarding, scuba diving, tennis and skydiving. We’re guessing he reads a bit, too, and can probably whip up a tasty plate of pasta. The French have a term for modern-day Renaissance Men like James: sui generis. He could tell you what it means.
